Environmental Accounts published today show that

• Estimated Greenhouse gas emissions in 2004 were 22.9% higher than the 1990 reference year, which is a slight increase on the 2003 level of 22.2%. Under the Kyoto protocol Ireland’s commitment is to a target of 13% above the 1990 levels.

Of the total Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing was the highest contributor at 29.8% (31.3% in 2003) followed by Transport at 20.2% (18.9% in 2003) and Industry at 16.9% (19.0% in 2003).

• Acid rain precursor emissions fell by 24.0% in the period 1997 to 2004.

This seventh set of accounts also contains minor revisions to the previous publication, in respect of the period 1996-2003.
